While some of us probably assumed that Microsoft would focus its efforts on supporting Age of Empires IV, it now seems the plan is to continue supporting the various Age of Empires Definitive Editions as well.

The timing of this new DLC definitely caught some Age of Empires players off guard, as Age of Empires IV launched just about a month ago. Finally, the third historical battle, “The Battle of Queenston Heights,” will be available to everyone who owns both the United States and Mexico DLCs, which will both be available in a bundle. Age of Empires IV is set to release in fall of 2021 on PC and Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription service. The second battle will be available to all who own the United States Civilization DLC and will center on “The Burning of USS Philadelphia. It sounds like there’s a lot to the Mexico civilization, so it might take some time for it to settle into the meta. Mexico can also opt to reverse its revolts while keeping the benefits of cards that were sent during the revolution.

Microsoft says that revolution “offers you a whole new deck full of opportunities,” but it’s not clear what those opportunities are. In a blog post to the Age of Empires website, Microsoft says Mexico is “the most strategically diverse civilization yet.” Apparently, the civilization’s strategic diversity comes from the fact that it can choose to revolt rather than clicking up to the next age, be it the Fortress, Industrial, or Imperial eras. Not only does the campaign add the Mexican civilization to the game, but it adds three new historical battles as well. The rag-doll physics make for fun combat scenes, but the graphics themselves are actually less impressive than last year's Rise of Nations.The Mexican civilization and new historical battlesĪs far as DLC goes, this one seems pretty straightforward. Also, we were slightly disappointed with the range of view and the graphics overall. Such shortcuts might exist, but without detailed help, we couldn't tell. Noticeable absences in the hot-keys list are the ability to select all of one unit type and to create custom unit groups.

Gameplay is deep, involved, and addictive, though the one major addition-the ability to send special shipments from home cities-seems extraneous. In two single-player scenarios (building trading posts along a railroad track and defending a fort) and two skirmish maps (Texas and New England), you'll be collecting resources, raising structures, creating units, and bombarding your enemies. The ReadMe.rtf file includes a useful list of shortcut keys, but there's no introduction or explanation of the gameplay, so you'll have to find your own way. The Age of Empires III demo provides hours of fabulous real-time fun, but lack of documentation and instruction haunts the experience.
